Avalanche Skills Training level 1 (snowmobile specific) Jan 6-8 2017

2 field days on snow and 1 classroom session

Must have your own snowmobile and must be somewhat comfortable operating it.  Lodgining is not included but can be booked at an extra fee if needed. Open for men and women.

You will learn:

The Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 Course will provide a beginner level decision-making framework that is based on the most advanced knowledge available. It is suitable for use by people with a little to no degree of training and experience.

Objectives
At the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Understand the basics of avalanche formation and release.
  • Identify avalanche terrain.
  • Know the steps to plan and carry out a trip
  • Use the Avulator2.0 as a decision-making tool in areas where trips are rates using the Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scale (ATES) and where avalanche bulletins are available
  • Find resources for obtaining ATES terrain ratings if their trip is not rated
  • Find resources for obtaining avalanche danger ratings and avalanche bulletins if they are not available
  • Use appropriate travel techniques in avalanche terrain
  • Carry out a companion rescue 
  • Understand the limits of their training

AVALANCHE SKILLS TRAINING LEVEL 2 (SNOWMOBILE SPECIFIC) JAN 16-19 2017

4 FIELD DAYS ON SNOW AND 2 EVENING CLASSROOM SESSIONS IN PEMBERTON, BC.

Must have your own snowmobile and must be somewhat comfortable operating it and we ask that you have already completed the AST 1 course (to be in tune with all the terms).  Lodgining is not included but can be booked at an extra fee if needed. Open for men and women.

YOU WILL LEARN:

The Avalanche Skills Training Level 2 Course will provide an intermediate level decision-making framework that is based on the most advanced knowledge available. It is suitable for use by people with a moderate degree of training and experience.

In addition, the course will:

  • Provide the prerequisite knowledge required for further avalanche training.
  • Introduce and promote the Canadian Avalanche Association Industry Training Program as the accepted standard for advanced avalanche training.

Objectives
At the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Use the Avaluator™ as a filtering tool to determine when additional planning and travel techniques are required to travel safely.
  • Be familiar with Avalanche Danger Ratings verification techniques for personal use on a local scale.
  • Be familiar with the ATES technical model as a means to develop personal, local terrain ratings.
  • Use routefinding to take advantage of nuances in terrain to manage personal risk.
  • Use travel techniques in avalanche terrain appropriate to the avalanche conditions.
  • Proficiently carry out a companion rescue.
  • Understand the limits of their training.

Bring a buddy sledding! Jan 21, Feb 8 & March 18 2017

This clinic is designed to introduce a complete beginner (or someone who has tried only a couple of times or doubled a couple of times) to snowmobiling to see if its something they really want to get into. You have been snowmobiling for years (or maybe only a year or two) and have that buddy or girlfriend that you really want to get into sledding? This day is for you two! This clinic is also designed to teach the already existing snowmobiler how to teach a beginner, be patient and how to get into them into the sport safely and comfortably.  Open for men and women.

This clinic is designed to help the intermediate or advanced rider move to the next step of freeriding in the backcountry. It is open for women only.  Its all about starting small with something you are comfortable with and moving to something bigger when you are ready. Lots of photos and videos will be taken of you to show your loved ones all their air miles you collect all weekend!  There is nothing better of a feeling when you're out in the backcountry getting cheered on by a bunch of ladies to hit something! 

We will cover:

  • Basic avalanche saftey
  • what throttle control is needed to hit features
  • what body positioning you should have to hit features
  • how to identify natural features to hit
  • how to build a safe jump
  • how to spot out and hit safe drops (if snow conditions permit)
